Sculpture Series
Lana by Lupu
Monumental sculptural works reimagining American folklore through icons that challenge narratives of race, gender, and identity.

Concept

Lana by Lupu is an anagram of Paul Bunyan, a traditional American icon. Where Bunyan represents mythic white masculinity, Lana introduces monumental figures rooted in historically marginalized identities. The series invites reflection on who we choose to monumentalize — and why.

These works explore untold histories and lived experiences, encouraging viewers to reconsider the symbols embedded in American cultural memory.

Form & Scale

Designed as 12-foot sculptural installations, the figures are constructed using mixed media including wood, foam, cement, rebar, and paint. The process merges traditional sculptural craftsmanship with contemporary fabrication methods.

The scale references roadside “Muffler Men” and Americana monuments, transforming that visual language into a platform for dialogue and inclusion.

Purpose

The series examines strength, resilience, and the overlooked contributions of individuals throughout American history. By presenting alternative icons in monumental form, the work challenges conventional narratives and expands the conversation around identity, power, and representation.
